HC Deb 25 April 1917 vol 92 c2369
21. Mr. TREVELYAN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been called to the case of Private V. T. Chesswas, a Christadelphian, who has been refused exemption from military service, although it has been accorded in the case of all others of the society; whether he is aware that the reason given was that he has not actually been baptised into the society; and, in view of the fact that he has been for eighteen years connected with the society and has produced a certificate of his genuineness from the authorities of the church where he worships, will he say what action he proposes to take?

Mr. MACPHERSON

This man's name does not appear on the list of recognised members of the Christadelphian Churches which was supplied to the War Office last year by a representative of that denomination, but this does not affect the man's right of application for exemption to a tribunal, and I have no information as to the grounds on which such application, if made, was refused.

Sir J. D. REES

Does the War Office allow that any person who calls himself a Christadelphian, whatever that may be, is exempt from military service?
