HC Deb 24 April 1917 vol 92 cc2211-2
18. Colonel Sir CHARLES SEELY

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the necessity of the granting of permits for petrol for the use of mechanical sheep-shearing machines in view of the shortage of sheep-shearers owing to so many having joined the Army; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

Sir R. WINFREY

Arrangements have already been made for dealing with this matter at the Food Production Department of the Board, where any applications received by the Board from farmers who need petrol, whether for sheep-shearing or other agricultural machines, are looked into without delay. The Department then makes its recommendations to the Petrol Control Committee, generally with the result that a licence is issued at once.

Colonel Sir C. SEELY

Will that apply also to labouring sheep shearers as well as to farmers?

Sir R. WINFREY

Certainly, it will apply to them all.
