HC Deb 24 April 1917 vol 92 c2231
69. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of National Service whether the original scheme, having failed, has been in effect withdrawn and supplanted by a new scheme; and whether he can state the expenditure incurred by his Department in respect of rent, staff, meetings, literature, railway fares, indexing, and personal expenses of speakers in trying to popularise and render workable. The original scheme of National Service?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of NATIONAL SERVICE (Mr. Stephen Walsh)

As the hon. Member is aware, the original scheme of National Service was two-fold, the enrolment of National Service volunteers being a function of the Director-General of National Service, and their allocation to employment being the duty of the Ministry of Labour. The latter function will pass to the Director-General on the 1st May, and the general campaign for the enrolment of volunteers having now secured a substantial response is for the present suspended. The cost of the publicity campaign of the National Service Department up to the 16l.th instant is approximately £62,000.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

How many volunteers have been secured by this expenditure of £62,000?

Mr. WALSH

I have already stated in a previous answer about 280,000 have been secured, but that number has been since increased considerably.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

How many of these men have been placed?

Mr. WALSH

I have nothing to do with the placing.
