HC Deb 24 April 1917 vol 92 cc2210-1
Mr. FLAVIN

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland how much bacon, butter, and eggs were held up in transit from the South of Ireland during the last week end, owing to insufficient railway and shipping facilities; whether the butter, eggs and bacon were for local consumption or intended for cross-channel markets; and whether he can also say what proportion of the bacon, butter and eggs came from Cork and Kerry?

Mr. DUKE

Towards the end of last week consignments of butter, bacon, and eggs for cross-channel markets were delayed at Dublin, owing to the necessity for providing for the conveyance of fish, a more perishable commodity. I cannot state the exact quantities. I am told that the greater part of the traffic which was delayed came from the counties referred to in the question. The railway and steamship companies will do all they can to avoid loss upon perishable goods, but it is impossible to guarantee sufficient transport in case of a glut of a particular kind of goods.
