HC Deb 04 April 1917 vol 92 cc1282-3
53. Major NEWMAN

asked whether the recent change of Government in Russia. has interfered with the negotiations that were on foot between the two countries relative to the compulsory enlistment for military service in one shape or another of the 20,000 Russian subjects of military age who are computed to be in the Metropolis alone?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Yes, Sir, but negotiations are proceeding with the new Russian Government on the subject.

Mr. KING

Will the right hon. Gentlemen say what was the nature of the communication that came through the Russian Embassy yesterday upon this subject?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The hon. Member is better informed than I am. I was not aware there was any communication.

Mr. KING

Arising out of the answer I shall raise this matter on the Debate for the Adjournment.

Major NEWMAN

Will the right hon. Gentleman impress on the two Labour Members who are going to Russia how important it is that we should get these people to do something?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I think probably they will realise its importance without my impressing it on them.
