HC Deb 18 October 1916 vol 86 c561
Mr. M'KEAN

(by Private Notice) asked the Home Secretary what is the number of people in Ireland who have been arrested after and as a consequence of the rising in Ireland in Easter week of the present year, and how many are still in prison or in internment camps?

Mr. SAMUEL

About 3,200 persons were in the hands of the authorities—military and police—after the rising. About 1,200 of these were released at once or soon after by the military authorities; 183 were dealt with by courts-martial and 1,863 were interned under No. 14B of the Defence of the Realm Regulations. Of the latter 1,282 have since been released on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee, the number remaining in internment at the present time being 576.

Mr. M'KEAN

Is the Government prepared to pay damages to those persons who, having been arrasted, were detained for a period and ultimately set free, and is it intended to award compensation for losses incurred in trade?

Mr. SAMUEL

That does not arise out of the question of which I had private notice.
