HC Deb 17 October 1916 vol 86 cc377-8
105. Mr. MOLTENO

asked the Secretary for Scotland if he will state what schemes have been initiated for the creation of small holdings under the Small Landholders Act in the current year, and how many settlers it is contemplated will be placed upon the holdings in connection with these schemes; and whether he will state what schemes have been initiated and are now in course of completion since the 1st January, 1916?

Mr. TENNANT

No schemes have so far been initiated for the creation of small holdings in the current year. Negotiations and proceedings in respect of a number of schemes initiated prior to 1st January, 1916, have been materially advanced, and forty-six new holdings and twenty-three enlargements have been occupied since that date in connection with such schemes. It is anticipated that these numbers will be increased substantially before the end of the year.

106. Mr. MOLTENO

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether the Board of Agriculture for Scotland have considered the problem of the settlement of soldiers and sailors upon the land after the War; and what conclusions have been arrived at?

Mr. TENNANT

The settlement of sailors and soldiers upon the land has been the subject of consideration by the Board of Agriculture for Scotland for some time, and, as I think my hon. Friend is aware, the subject is engaging my constant attention. It would be premature to make any announcement of policy at present.

107. Mr. MOLTENO

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether a site has been selected for the pioneer small holdings colony; and what progress has been made?

Mr. TENNANT

A site has not yet been selected, but several areas are being considered, and the matter is engaging careful attention. My hon. Friend will realise the necessity for proceeding with care in such an important matter.
