HC Deb 21 November 1916 vol 87 cc1213-4
83. Colonel YATE

asked the Prime Minister, whether considering that it is not proposed to publish at the present time the dispatches relating to the operations in East Africa during the years 1914 and 1915 and that the "London Gazette" during the years 1915 and 1916 contain only the announcement of certain decorations, medals, and brevets conferred on a few officers who were engaged in those operations, he will now sanction the publication of those portions of the dispatches giving the names of the officers and men who were mentioned for distinguished service by the various general officers commanding concerned?

Mr. FORSTER

General Smuts in his dispatch of 8th May, 1916, published in a supplement to the "London Gazette,"30th June, 1916, included the names of officers and men who had been mentioned for distinguished service in the operations in East Africa from the commencement of hostilities until the 12th February, 1916, the date on which General Smuts assumed command. I regret that in my answer of 14th November I overlooked the fact that the hon. and gallant Member was referring to "Mentions" and not to "Rewards."

Colonel YATE

Is it a fact that those whose names have been mentioned for service in 1914 and 1915 have had their names published in the "Gazette"?

Mr. FORSTER

Yes, their names have been published in the "Gazette."
