HC Deb 21 November 1916 vol 87 c1190
44. Sir J. D. REES

asked what steps are being taken to recall from friendly foreign countries men who would, if in the United Kingdom, be liable to be called up for military duty?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister is answering a question on this matter later to-day, i.e., No. 77 by the hon. and gallant Member for the Enfield Division. To this answer I would refer my hon. Friend.

77. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether, of the Allied nations, Great Britain alone neither possesses nor has taken means to acquire the necessary powers to recall for military service British citizens residing in Allied or neutral countries; and whether the Government will so amend the Military Service Act as to make it applicable to male British subjects resident elsewhere than in enemy territory, with a penalty that those unlawfully evading service will, at the termination of hostilities, be treated as aliens of enemy birth?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

Steps are being taken by administrative action with a view to eligible British subjects resident in Allied or neutral countries undertaking military service, unless it is in the public interest in any case that any individual should continue in his present occupation. At the present time I am advised that the legislation mentioned in the question is not necessary.

Sir E. CARSON

Will that apply to Irish subjects living elsewhere than in Ireland?

Mr. PRINGLE

What is an Irish subject?
