HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 cc944-5
9. Sir E. CORNWALL

asked the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs whether he can give the House any information as to the direct co-operation of Portugal in the War?

Lord R. CECIL

Yes, Sir; the Portuguese Expeditionary Force in East Africa has been rendering signal service to the Allied cause in the southern regions of German East Africa, and has gained several important successes over the German troops. I need scarcely add that the Government and people of Portugal, acting in the spirit of the highest loyalty, have done and are doing everything in their power to take an active part in promoting the common cause, wherever their assistance can be useful.
