HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 c984
109. Mr. TREVELYAN

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that the Birmingham police have visited the house of Mr. Hubert Lemon, the secretary of a monthly paper called the "Forward." published by the Rotton Park branch of the Independent Labour Party, and informed him that the distribution of the paper must not be continued, and that no copies of the current issue must go out; and whether this action has been authorised by him under the Defence of the Realm Act?

Mr. SAMUEL

I am informed by the Chief Constable of Birmingham that the police called on Mr. Lemon to make certain inquiries with regard to the "Forward." They did not require authority from the Home Office for doing this. They did not tell him that the distribution of the paper must be discontinued.
