HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 cc946-7
13. Major NEWMAN

asked the Chief Secretary whether he can now say the steps that have been taken by the Irish Office to comb out of the various branches of the Civil Service men of military age who are not indispensable; and what are the results to date?

Mr. DUKE

The Irish Executive has encouraged men of military age in the Irish Departments to enlist. No compulsory process is applicable in the existing state of the law.

Mr. REDDY

Have any steps been taken to prevent officers showing the white feather?

Mr. DUKE

I am not aware that anybody in the Department for which I speak has been guilty of that offence.
