HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 cc978-9
84. Mr. BROOKES

asked what is the policy of the Government with respect to securing employment for disabled soldiers discharged from the Army; whether the local pensions committee are permitted to set up registers for this purpose; and whether the Labour Exchanges are authorised to see that men who have served their country receive so far as is possible preferential treatment in their efforts to return to civil life?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Hayes Fisher)

It is one of the functions of the local pensions committees, subject to the approval of the Statutory Committee, to assist disabled men to find -employment. The local committees have been asked to form registers of disabled soldiers in their districts, but in connection with the provision of employment? they have been strongly advised by the Statutory Committee to work in close cooperation with the local Employment Exchanges. The Exchanges receive from the War Office particulars of all disabled soldiers discharged, and have been instructed to devote special attention to the work of finding employment for these men. In view of the general shortage of labour of all kinds no occasion has, so far, arisen for issuing instructions for preferential treatment.
