HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 c950
78. Colonel YATE

asked what steps have been taken for the enlistment of Russians, French, Italians, and subjects of other Allied nations, respectively, residing at present in the United Kingdom, either in the British Army or in the army of their own nation?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

The Government have promoted, and when necessary have required, the return to their own country of French, Belgian, Italian, and Serbian subjects called up for military service. In a comparatively small number of special cases men of Allied nationalities have been admitted to the British Army. With respect to Russians, I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to my statements in the House on 24th July and 22nd August, and to the reply given by the Secretary of State for the Colonies on behalf of the Prime Minister on 9th November to a question by the hon. Member for Kirkcaldy Burghs.

Mr. HOUSTON

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the formation of a Foreign Legion on the same lines as the French Foreign Legion?
