HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 cc801-2
107. Sir R. COOPER

asked if a Mr. Breitmeyer has been appointed chief ad- viser of the Government for the export of diamonds; and was he an unnaturalised German at the commencement of the War?

Mr. PRETYMAN

Mr. Breitmeyer is a member of the Diamond Exports Committee, of which Mr. A. Mosely, C.M.G., is chairman. Mr. Breitmeyer was naturalised in October, 1914; I understand that he is of German birth, but he has lived in this country for many years.

Sir R, COOPER

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether his Department were unable to find a Britisher to advise them?

Mr. PRETYMAN

It was impossible to find anyone with the particular knowledge and qualifications for dealing with this matter possessed by Mr. Breitmeyer.

Mr. PROTHERO

Is it not a fact that Mr. Breitmeyer's only son is serving in the British Army, and was so serving before the War began?

Mr. PRETYMAN

I believe that is so.
