Mr. NEWDEGATEasked the Prime Minister whether he will use his influence to bring about the acceptance of the services of experienced men of business who are ineligible for military service to take up duties temporarily on behalf of the Government in order to release Govern- 184 ment employés eligible for military service; and whether he is aware that experienced business men who have already volunteered to take up such work have hitherto, in very many cases, had their services rejected?
§ The PRIME MINISTERA register of persons available for temporary employment in the Civil Service is kept, and a large number of substitutes have been obtained from it to replace men on military service In many cases, however, applicants are found to be unsuited by age and previous training for filling clerical positions in Government Departments.
