HC Deb 31 May 1916 vol 82 cc2723-4
128. Mr. CHARLES DUNCAN

asked the Minister of Munitions whether any action has been taken in connection with the controlled firm of Messrs. Bentall, Limited, at Maldon, who have discharged three of their workmen because they were members of a trade union?

Dr. ADDISON

As my hon. Friend is no doubt aware, the point raised in this question has been the subject of proceedings before the Munitions Appeal Tribunal, and judgment was recently given against the firm. The view expressed by counsel on behalf of the Minister of Munitions was that for a firm to discharge workmen because they belonged to a trade union was to limit the output of munitions, and this was the view taken by the learned judge.

Mr. DUNCAN

Seeing that this firm has transgressed the Munitions Act, will he compel it to re-employ the men who were suspended?

Dr. ADDISON

We are dealing with that.
