HC Deb 31 May 1916 vol 82 cc2688-9
54. Mr. R. McNEILL

asked whether a clerk in the Irish Agricultural Department named Hagarty was a captain in the Irish Volunteers, and was arrested at the Four Courts during the recent rising for participation therein and deported to England; whether this man returned to his Department on the 22nd of May; and whether Hagarty is to be retained in his employment as a Civil servant in Ireland?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

Beyond the fact that the official referred to was deported, the Department of Agriculture have at present no evidence of the matters mentioned in the first part of the hon. Member's question, the inquiries instituted in the case not having as yet been completed.

Mr. McNEILL

Has Hagarty, in fact, returned to his employment in his Department?

The PRIME MINISTER

Yes, I believe he has, without prejudice to further inquiry.
