HC Deb 22 May 1916 vol 82 cc1811-2
51 Major HUNT

asked the Prime Minister (1) whether, in view of the fact that the last revision of the register was made in 1914, and that owing to the War large numbers of voters have removed to different parts of the country, he can now give an assurance that a new register of voters will be got ready as soon as possible in order that millions of voters may not be prevented from recording their votes until the year 1918; (2) whether it will be provided that, under the new register, every soldier and sailor of whatever age employed during the War at Home or abroad will be entitled to a vote; and (3) what arrangements have been made to enable soldiers in this country or abroad to vote by post at by-elections or in case of a General Election?

58. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether, having regard to the fact that, apart from those now serving abroad in the Navy and Army, some 30 per cent. of the electorate are disfranchised owing to the staleness of a register two years old, he will make an early statement as to the intentions of the Government in this matter?

69. Sir J. LONSDALE

asked if it is intended to introduce a Bill to provide for the compilaton of a new Parliamentary register of electors and a redistribution of seats?

The PRIME MINISTER

I hope to announce the intentions of the Government in this matter in the course of the present week.
