HC Deb 22 May 1916 vol 82 cc1814-5
33. Mr. GEORGE TERRELL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can see his way to release from the payment of the Motor Tax soldiers and sailors who have been permanently incapacitated from the use of their feet in the military or naval service of the country?

Mr. McKENNA

While I have every sympathy with those who have lost their limbs in the service of the country, I am afraid it would not be feasible to recompense them for their sacrifice in the manner suggested in the question.

Mr. TERRELL

Could not the right hon. Gentleman really consider whether a runabout is not a necessity to a man who has lost his feet in the service of his country?

Mr. McKENNA

I do not think that it would be a proper arrangement to give additional recompense to one person who has lost a limb in one form and to another person in another form.
