HC Deb 18 May 1916 vol 82 cc1653-4
39. Mr. C. WASON

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty if he will request the Scottish fishery officer at Lerwick to report to him on the question of compensation to fishermen whose nets and gear were destroyed by the explosion at Lerwick wharf over a year ago; and if it has been brought to his notice that some persons have received no compensation and others have been so inadequately compensated that they are unable to prosecute their calling?

Dr. MACNAMARA

All the claims received from fishermen in respect of damage to their nets in the explosion at Lerwick were investigated by an Admiralty officer shortly after the accident, and no reason is seen for obtaining a further report from the fishery officer now. The ex gratia grant approved by the Government was distributed among all the parsons from whom claims had been received, and no cases have been brought to my notice in which no awards were made. It is now under consideration to make a further distribution among certain fishermen to whom my hon. Friend referred in his question of the 30th March.
