§ 75. Major WHELERasked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, as the majority of men who attest under the Derby scheme are able to do so without the loss of a day's wages, he will consider the desirability of discontinuing the payment of the 1s. 7d. ration allowance paid to each man on attestation at the same time as he receives the 1s. Army pay for the day?
§ Mr. FORSTERGladly as I should welcome any saving compatible with fair treatment of the men, I do not see my way to accept this suggestion. To stop the allowance in all cases would produce many well-founded complaints, and to inquire into the circumstances of each case would be impracticable.
