HC Deb 03 May 1916 vol 82 cc3-4
1. Mr. HOHLER

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he can now say how many non-commissioned officers in the Royal Marines and the Royal Marine Light Infantry serving at headquarters have been promoted over the heads of senior non-commissioned officers serving with their brigades since the commencement of the War; and whether more consideration will be given to those serving with the brigades?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

I cannot undertake to give the figures asked for, but I can assure my hon. and learned Friend that promotions are made with every care and consideration.

Mr. HOHLER

Will the right hon. Gentleman give more consideration to men who are serving with their brigades? The men think it unfair that those serving at headquarters should be promoted over their heads.

Dr. MACNAMARA

I should be sorry if that feeling prevailed, and I can assure my hon. Friend every care is taken in the matter.

Mr. HOHLER

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the men consider there is some undue influence operating in favour of the men at headquarters as against men in the brigades, and that is a gross injustice they grievously feel?

Dr. MACNAMARA

So far as I can say, it is entirely unfounded; I can only repeat what I have said, that the greatest care is taken.
