HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 c2271
75. Mr. WHITEHOUSE

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has now reviewed the circumstances under which telephone subscribers at Cambuslang are unable to use the Glasgow district except upon extra payment; and whether he will now abolish this payment, seeing that the Cambuslang area is commercially inseparable from the Glasgow area and that for many years no distinction was made?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

Cambuslang is about five miles from the centre of Glasgow. The additional charge of one penny on telephone calls is due to the fact that Cambuslang is outside the Glasgow central area. The general rule for the whole country upon which additional charge is justified is that such a charge should be made between all exchanges which are more than two miles apart.

Mr. WHITEHOUSE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the matter can be reviewed with the object of reverting to the old practice?

Mr. PEASE

I have looked into it, and I do not think I can give any preference to this over any other area.
