HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 cc2251-2
59. Mr. YEO

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the average salary of the clerks in the Labour Exchanges and Unemployment Insurance Department is £85-£90 per annum; if so, whether His Majesty's Government proposes to take any action towards removing the financial disabilities consequent on this scale of remuneration?

Mr. PRETYMAN

The scale of salary to the men clerks in the Labour Exchanges and Unemployment Insurance Department is £60, rising by annual increments of £5 to £150 per annum. In addition,259 clerks receive allowances at the rate of £20 or £10 per annum for special supervising duties and in lieu of overtime, and the remaining clerks receive payment under certain specified conditions for overtime. The initial salary and increments of women clerks are the same, but only a proportion of the total employed can proceed beyond £105 per annum. The provision for the salaries of the clerks in the Estimates would represent an average salary (exclusive of allowances and overtime) of about £87 per annum in the year 1915-16. As stated in my reply to the hon. Members for Peterborough and East Wolverhampton on the 22nd February, 1916, the subject of the remuneration of the clerks in the Labour Exchanges and Unemployment Insurance Department is under consideration with the Treasury.
