HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 cc2225-6
1. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Contraband Committee acts as a sub-department of the Foreign Office?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir E. Grey)

I have nothing to add to the explanation of the position of the Contraband Committee which I gave during the Debate on the 26th January, except that any question raised as to its decision would now come before the Minister whose appointment in connection with this and kindred subjects was stated by the Prime Minister.

Sir J. D. REES

Does any authority which the Contraband Committee has flow from the Foreign Secretary?

Sir E. GREY

I thought the Prime Minister had announced that my right hon. Friend the Under-Secretary was, at the request of the Committee, undertaking contraband work. The Contraband Committee is only one of several Committees which deal with this question—one part of the scheme of co-ordination which is being carried out under the supervision of my right hon. Friend.

2. Sir J. D. REES

asked whether magnetic ore has yet been declared absolute contraband of war?

Sir E. GREY

The answer is in the negative.
