HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 c2241
20. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) how many inspectors and higher officials of the Department are not Irish-born; why they have not gone to the War; and whether it is for a son of one of them who has gone that an important post in the College of Science is being kept vacant to the detriment of that college?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Department have no record of the nationality of the members of their staff. A considerable number of the Department's staff of inspectors and those of similar rank who were of military age have joined His Majesty's Forces, while in many other cases the Department were unable to dispense with the services of those desirous of enlisting. There is no foundation for the suggestion contained in the concluding portion of the question.
