Mr. SNOWDENasked if the officers and their crew of the mercantile marine have been exempted from service under the Military Service Act, 1916; if so, why ships' stewards on passenger ships have not been included in such exemption, seeing that under the Merchant Shipping Act the stewards are part of the crew; and, in view of the fact that ship stewards are often required to take up duties which it would not be possible for women to discharge, he will consider the desirability of also exempting ship stewards who can produce a three years' continuous discharge for sea-going experience?
