37. Mr. TYSON WILSONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many 1025 men of the temporary staff of the Land Valuation Department who have joined the Army or the Navy since the War commenced are having their Army or Navy pay made up to the amount of salary they were receiving; and whether men who attested and are now being called up are receiving similar treatment?
§ Mr. McKENNAThe number of members of the Temporary Valuation Staff who have joined His Majesty's forces with the benefit of the Treasury Regulations is about 900. With regard to the second part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answers given on the 20th April, 1915, to the hon. Member for Haggerston, and on the 17th November, 1915, to the hon. Member for the St. Augustine's Division of Kent. I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of those answers.
§ Mr. ASHLEYWould the right hon. Gentleman see that they are put on some really useful work when they come back to civil life?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThat question does not arise.
38. Mr. WILSONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many men of military age, married and single, have been transferred from the Land Valuation Department to the Inspector of Taxes Department; and whether the men so transferred are exempted from military service?
§ Mr. McKENNAAs I have explained on previous occasions, the necessities of war revenue make it impossible to release from their revenue duties any more members of the Tax Surveying Branch of the Inland Revenue. On the strength of that staff there are some 180 ex-members of the Inland Revenue Valuation Branch of military age (about 110 married) coming within the rule which I have just explained.
