HC Deb 20 June 1916 vol 83 c7
2. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether martial law is now in force throughout Egypt; whether His Majesty's Government have given consent to the military order now exhibited in the streets of Alexandria that any person trying to take foodstuffs or other goods to the Sennusi or their agents is liable to the death penalty, apparently without trial, and that any person going away with more food or goods than the needs of himself and those with him demand will be deemed guilty of the fore going offence and therefore liable to the death penalty; and whether this order will be withdrawn or modified or a trial by Egyptians allowed before execution?

Sir E. GREY

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second point, I have no information concerning the publication of an order such as the hon. Member describes.

Mr. GINNELL

Does the right hon. Gentleman not think it worth while to inquire further into the matter?

Sir E. GREY

No, I do not see any need to inquire.
