HC Deb 31 July 1916 vol 84 cc2059-60
66. Mr. FLAVIN

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that booklets and photographs dealing with the rebellion and destruction of buildings in Dublin have been published and sold throughout Ireland by three leading Unionist publishers and printers in Dublin; and whether he can state by what authority the exhibition of these Unionist publications is prohibited in the windows of newspaper and stationery shops in the county of Kerry?

Mr. SAMUEL

I am aware of the circulation in Ireland of the publications referred to, though I am not acquainted with the political views of the publishers or printers. So far as I am aware there is no specific prohibition of the display or sale of such publications, but in a few cases the police have taken action at the instance of the competent military authority under the Defence of the Realm Regulations, and any question with regard to them should be addressed to the War Office.

Mr. FLAVIN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Kerry is the only county where these are restricted and that they are on exhibition and sale at every railway station in Ireland and in this country as well?

Mr. SAMUEL

I am not aware of that.

Mr. BYRNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that these postcards are being sold in the Strand in London?
