HC Deb 20 July 1916 vol 84 cc1167-8
25. Major NEWMAN

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that on Wednesday of last week a portion of the residence near Macroom, county Cork, of Captain Phillips was disfigured with tar, the emblems of the Irish republic painted on it, and shots fired; and whether, beyond the recruiting activities of Captain Phillips since the outbreak of War, there is any reason assigned for the occurrence?

Mr. SAMUEL

The occurrence described in the question has, I regret to say, taken place, and probably for the reason stated. The police have made inquiries, but have not yet been able to discover the perpetrator.
