HC Deb 18 July 1916 vol 84 c840
50. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware of the constitution of the convention of Nationalists that was recently assembled in Belfast to consider and approve of the proposal to bring the Government of Ireland Act into operation for a part of Ireland; and whether he will follow the precedent of the Scandinavian kingdoms and allow Ire land to decide by Referendum whether she is willing, after the actual proposals have been published in the form of a White Paper, to accept the proposal for self government therein set out?

The PRIME MINISTER

With regard to the first part of the question I know no more than what has appeared in the public Press on this subject; I do not think that it would be possible to adopt the suggestion contained in the last part of the question.

Sir E. CARSON

May I ask the Prime Minister whether there is anything to prevent the hon. and gallant Member going and holding a meeting himself?

The PRIME MINISTER

Nothing that I know of.
