HC Deb 18 July 1916 vol 84 c826
5. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, considering that young officers in uniform are compelled to travel first class when they would be able to travel third class in plain clothes, he will reconsider the recent order limiting the issue of Army Forms O 1799 and O 1800 entitling officers and other ranks, respectively, to return tickets at single fare when proceeding on leave?

Mr. FORSTER

I fully appreciate the point raised by my hon. and gallant Friend and its importance to the officers concerned. The order to which he refers is, I think, that promulgated in Army Order 102 of 1916, and, as I indicated in a reply given on the 4th May to the hon. Member for the Devizes Division, the concession had been interpreted more widely than was justified by the arrangements made with the Railway Executive Committee. There are difficulties in arranging a further concession, but the matter is receiving consideration.

Colonel YATE

Will the hon. Gentleman inform me what the result of that consideration is?

Mr. FORSTER

When a decision has been reached, certainly.

Mr. REDDY

Would their mothers allow. them to travel third class?
