§ 62. Mr. ASHLEYasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Salisbury Hotel, Salisbury Square, has been requisitioned by the War Savings Committee; and, if so, for what purpose was it taken over?
§ Mr. McKENNAArrangements have been made by the Office of Works to rent the hotel in question for the period of the War, for the use of the National War Savings Committee. The hotel has not been requisitioned. The reasons for this action are that the existing premises of the Committee are altogether inadequate to accommodate the 332 staff required to deal with the volume of work, which, I am glad to say, is still expanding very rapidly.
§ Mr. ASHLEYDoes it mean much saving to take extra premises with more clerks?
§ Mr. McKENNAIn the one case we are dealing with a rent for the whole year of, I think, £2,000, and in the other case we are dealing with, I hope, £100,000,000.
