HC Deb 05 July 1916 vol 83 c1512
99. Major NEWMAN

asked whether on the 26th ultimo a body of military officers were hissed and insulted by a crowd of Irish republicans on emerging from the Theatre Royal, Dublin; whether he is further aware that non-commissioned officers and private soldiers have complained in writing of having recently been hooted, jeered at, and spat upon while walking in the streets; and will he say what action he proposes to take?

Mr. SAMUEL

The police have no knowledge of the alleged occurrence at the Theatre Royal, nor was it reported to the Provost-Marshal. Soldiers have been hooted in the streets of Dublin upon a few occasions. The police have orders to arrest offenders.

Major NEWMAN

If I send the right hon. Gentleman a sworn affidavit by those who have seen these occurrences will he have the matter inquired into?

Mr. SAMUEL

I shall be very glad to consider any information the hon. Member gives me.
