HC Deb 12 January 1916 vol 77 cc1585-6
7. Sir E. CORNWALL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many British civilians were in Germany at the outbreak of the War; how many were interned; how many have died in Germany; and how many have been released?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Lord Robert Cecil)

It is obviously quite impossible to say how many British subjects were in Germany at the outbreak of war; some 5,000 civilians were eventually interned;. we have received information of the death of thirty-six persons; 398 are known to have been repatriated.

Mr. KING

Have any means been found available for protecting the property of British citizens in Germany while they are interned?

Lord R. CECIL

I do not think that that really arises out of this question. I shall be pleased to make inquiries if the hon. Member will put down a question.
