HC Deb 12 January 1916 vol 77 cc1592-3
47. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether it is intended that membership of the anti-Conscription and kindred fellowships shall constitute a claim for exemption from military service; and, if so, whether it will be necessary for the applicant to prove to the military service tribunal that he was duly admitted a fellow before the date of the introduction of the Military Service (No. 2) Bill?

The PRIME MINISTER

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative; the second does not, therefore, arise.

Mr. OUTHWAITE

Is it not a fact that persons who have conscientious objections to undertaking military service will have to serve, while curates who desire to fight and urge others to fight will be exempted?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is a matter for argument in debate.
