HC Deb 10 January 1916 vol 77 c1285
26. Mr. LYNCH

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether Renter's Telegraphic Agency is in any degree under the control of the Government, or whether any subsidy is paid to the agency in respect to telegrams transmitted to Australia, or whether by favour of the Government this agency enjoys any facilities or privileges; and, if so, whether he will take steps to ensure that the telegrams sent correspond to the truth and are not coloured for party purposes?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Reuter's Telegraphic Agency is not under the control of, and receives no subsidy from, His Majesty's Government. It enjoys no special facilities or privileges, but its telegrams are subject to the same censorship as those of all other private persons, companies and agencies.

Mr. LYNCH

Would the censorship modify a telegram that was ostensibly incorrect: would it go so far as that?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Not unless some public disadvantage would be caused by it.
