HC Deb 10 January 1916 vol 77 cc1262-3
11. Mr. PETO

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether any steps are being taken to revive the industry of kelp-burning in this country, with a view to rendering agriculture more independent of the importation of potash salts from Germany and assisting to find employment for discharged soldiers and others?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Acland)

Careful inquiries were made during last winter by the local officers of the Board as to the supplies of the different kinds of seaweed on the coasts of England and Wales. The result showed that there was no sufficient supply of seaweed suitable for kelp-making to encourage the Department then to proceed further in the matter.
