HC Deb 06 January 1916 vol 77 cc1082-3
20. Sir A. MOND

asked the Persident of the Board of Trade what number of men of military age are employed in producing articles considered necessary to carry on the civil life of the community, exclusive of munitions; and what number of men of military age are employed in non-essential industries?

Mr. PRETYMAN

I am quite unable to give a statistical reply to this question as so much depends on what at any moment should be regarded as necessary to the civil life of the country.

Sir A. MOND

Have the Department arrived at any figures at the present time?

Mr. PRETYMAN

We have arrived at certain figures for one part of the area, and we are doing our very best to arrive at others.
