HC Deb 06 January 1916 vol 77 c1108
93. Sir J. WALTON

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether, with a view to preventing the waste of public money, he will at once appoint a Committee to investigate the working of the contract department of the War Office, and to report thereon?

Mr. FORSTER

I do not think that it is necessary to appoint a special Committee for this purpose. A Committee has been appointed by the Government under the chairmanship of my right hon. Friend the President of the Local Government Board, to consider possibilities of economy in Army expenditure, and has already begun work. The Committee is composed as follows: Chairman, the Right Hon. W. H. Long, M.P. Members: The Chief of the Imperial General Staff, the Financial Secretary to the War Office, the Assistant Financial Secretary to the War Office, Mr. S. Baldwin, M.P., Mr. T. C. Dewey (Chairman of the Prudential Assurance Company), and Mr. H. E. Haward (Controller of the London County Council), with Mr. J. S. Ross, of the War Office, as Secretary.
