HC Deb 21 February 1916 vol 80 cc432-3
92. Mr. KING

asked whether officers, and men of the Territorial Force who are not liable for foreign service, and who are, in the opinion of the Army Council, suited for foreign service, are to be compelled to resign their commissions or to be discharged; whether such officers who have thus resigned and such men so discharged will be placed under the terms of the Military Service Act; and, if so, whether they will have the statutory opportunities to apply for exemption from the tribunals?

Mr. TENNANT

Officers and men of the Territorial Force who are neither excepted nor exempted will resign their commissions or be discharged and will automatically become Reservists. It will be open to them to apply to local tribunals for exemption under Section 2 of the Act, and in the event of any such application not having been finally disposed of before the appointed date the local tribunals will be requested to grant a temporary exemption until the final decision has been given. In such cases the applicant will remain a member of the Territorial Force during such temporary exemption.

Colonel ALAN SYKES

Does that apply to married officers as well as unmarried?

Mr. TENNANT

No. The Act of Parliament only applies to single men.
