HC Deb 21 February 1916 vol 80 cc415-6
71. Mr. BOOTH

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he has seen the annual medical report for Reading, which states that a labourer diseased on both sides with tuberculosis, and too far gone for any sanatorium treatment, has subsequently enlisted in the Royal Munster Fusiliers; whether he is aware that many consumptives have enlisted and thus for a period relieved the approved insurance societies of sickness pay; and whether there is any intention to send the consumptive soldiers to Egypt or to some mild locality?

Mr. TENNANT

I have not seen the report referred to, and I should be much obliged if my hon. Friend would furnish me with a copy. I am afraid that there is some foundation for the statement made in the second part of the question, but the Army Council's intention is not as stated in the last part of the question. As soon as it is discovered that a man is suffering from phthisis he is invalided from the Service.

Mr. BOOTH

May I present a copy to my right hon. Friend?

Mr. TENNANT

Certainly.
