HC Deb 14 December 1916 vol 88 cc814-5
10. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he can offer any explanation of the conduct of the police at Moycullen, county Galway, in tearing down a poster announcing a collection for the Irish Language National Fund; whether there is any warrant for treating this as an illegal purpose; whether it is by direction, or as a means of getting promotion, policemen pursue Gaelic teachers from village to village in the West of Ireland, and send their children as spies to ceilidhthe; whether he has noticed that the Gaelic League authorities publicly advise restraint under this provocation; and whether the Government have decided to try to extirpate the Gaelic language?

The CHIEF SECRETARY for IRELAND (Mr. Duke)

So far as the Government is concerned I know, and so far as individuals are concerned I am informed that there is no foundation for the allegations in the question except that in the case of a person suspected of promoting disloyalty, who happens to be a Gaelic League organiser, it was considered necessary to keep his movements under supervision.

Mr. GINNELL

Has the right hon. Gentleman inquired of any other authority but the police?

Mr. DUKE

I know something from my own knowledge of the matter, without asking any person.
