HC Deb 04 December 1916 vol 88 c618
1. Mr. FELL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been called to the fact that the Germans are getting the Turks to increase greatly the area of land in the Turkish Empire which is planted with wheat; and if he can arrange that the same shall be done in Egypt and the Soudan?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Lord Robert Cecil)

As regards the first part of the question, I have no definite information but it is probably the case that every effort is being made to stimulate the production of wheat throughout the Turkish Empire. His Majesty's Government are in communication with the Egyptian and Soudanese Governments as regards the possibilty of increasing the supplies of wheat available for export from those countries, and the question will be examined with the utmost care and expedition.
