HC Deb 04 December 1916 vol 88 cc645-6
45. Sir STUART COATS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, with reference to the 661,000 claim forms applying for repayment of Income Tax which have been dealt with by the Department for Inland Revenue from 1st January to date, whether he will now give the number and amount of claims with which the Department has not dealt up to the present?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. McKinnon Wood)

The figure 681,000 was the total figure of claim forms for the period covered by the Report on which my figures were based, and, as I stated in this House on the 28th ultimo, only 15,250 were unsettled at the time when the Report in question was compiled.

Sir S. COATS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the figures which he gave give an entirely misleading idea as to the whole situation, and will he give an assurance that all cases in which Income Tax has been overpaid will be settled promptly?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

They will be settled as promptly as possible.
