HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 cc846-7
25. Major NEWMAN

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that firms who have War Office contracts in hand and whose employés have been combed out by the badging committee are now applying to local tribunals to have these employés exempted on the grounds that they will not otherwise be able to complete their contracts, and have been threatened with proceedings in consequence; and, in the event of the tribunal refusing to undo the work of the badging committee, what action does he propose to take?

Mr. FORSTER

The de-badging of a man does not remove from him or from his employer the right of application to a tribunal for exemption. The tribunal has the opportunity of going into the whole question when an application is made in a case such as is mentioned by the hon. Member, and unless very special circumstances arise no further action is taken in the matter after it has been dealt with by the tribunal.
