HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 cc865-6
58. Mr. R. MCNEILL

asked the Prime Minister if he will introduce legislation to make it illegal for any person not a native-born British subject to become a Member of either House of Parliament or of the Privy Council?

The PRIME MINISTER

I must refer my hon. Friend to the answers I gave to similar questions put by the hon. and gallant Member for the Enfield Division on the 21st July.

Mr. McNEILL

Is the right hon. Gentleman going to persist in disregarding the feelings of the country in this matter?

The PRIME MINISTER

I need not point out that that would apply to General Botha.

59. Mr. McNEILL

asked the Prime Minister whether he will introduce legislation as soon as convenient after the summer recess to give effect to the policy recommended by the late Lord Kitchener making it illegal for a period of years after the War for any German to become naturalised or domiciled in the United Kingdom?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am not aware to what statement of Lord Kitchener my hon. Friend refers. The whole question of the treatment of enemy aliens after the War is receiving consideration. I cannot at present make any statement.

Mr. BUTCHER

Will the right hon. Gentleman, as soon as possible after the War, and possibly before it, introduce a Bill to amend the Naturalisation Laws?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is a very large question, and I should like to have time to consider it.
