HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 c862
46. Sir P. MAGNUS

asked the Prime Minister whether, having regard to the public interest in the future of our national system of education, he will inform the House of the number of Committees of inquiry that have been set up; whether he can give the terms of reference and the names of the members of each Committee; and whether he will publish the terms of reference and the composition of any other Committee that may be appointed in connection with the present educational inquiry?

The PRIME MINISTER

A Committee was constituted in the spring to consider the education of children and young persons after the War with special reference to the relations between education and employment. Two other Committees have been appointed, one to consider the position of Natural Science, the other of Modern Languages in our educational system. The announcement of the membership and terms of reference of these Committees will shortly be made. My Noble Friend the President of the Council stated the other day that the Government are taking steps to review the whole system of education, but it would be convenient, at any rate at the present stage, if the hon. Gentleman did not press me for further particulars as to this inquiry. As regards the announcement of any other inquiries which may be undertaken, I cannot pledge myself beforehand, but I see no reason to doubt that due publicity will be given.
